Prophet Lout (Lot)

may Allaah exalt his mention

Prophet Lout, may Allaah exalt his mention, the son of Haaraan Ibn Taarih, lived with his uncle, Prophet Ibraaheem (Abraham), may Allaah exalt his mention, for a period of time in the land of Raafidayn (i.e. the land of the two rivers: the Euphrates and the Tigris), which is now known as Iraq, who was the reason behind him embracing Islam. Lout, may Allaah exalt his mention, was affected by the struggle that took place between Ibraaheem, may Allaah exalt his mention, and his people, and how he confronted his people and called them to believe in Allaah and give up worshiping stones that brought neither benefit nor harm. On asking them to believe in his call and religion, Ibraaheem's people started to persecute him violently to the extent that they collected firewood to burn him, but Allaah saved him.

When they shunned his call and disowned him, Prophet Ibraaheem, may Allaah exalt his mention, migrated to Palestine and took with him his nephew Lout. They both lived there for some time then Lout left his uncle, Ibraaheem, may Allaah exalt their mention, in the land of Palestine and went to Sodom in Jordan because Allaah, Glorified and Exalted is He, sent him as a Prophet to its people to call them to worship Allaah and to forbid them from the evil deeds they used to do.

The Prophet Lout, may Allaah exalt his mention, went to them and started to forbid them from committing adultery and fornication, and homosexuality. He also called them to repent to Allaah soon or else, Allaah would punish them

with a painful torment. However, the people of Sodom did not respond to his call and persisted in committing homosexuality. Then they thought of driving their Prophet, and those who had believed, out of their town. They said as Allaah informs us in the Quran (what means),

{"Drive out the family of Lout (Lot) from your city. Verily, these are men who want to be clean and pure!"}

[Quran 27: 56].

He, may Allaah exalt his mention, kept calling them and warned them that they would come to a terrible end if they continued to do such evil deeds. They mocked him and asked him to bring the torment soon if he was truthful. When Prophet Lout, may Allaah exalt his mention, became sure that they would not respond to him, he invoked his Lord to grant him victory over them, saying (what means),

{"My Lord! Give me victory over the people who are Mufsidoon (those who commit great crimes and sins, oppressors, tyrants, mischief-makers, corrupts)."}

[Quran 29: 30].

Allaah, Glorified and Exalted is He, answered the call of His Prophet Lout, may Allaah exalt his mention, and sent to his people honorable angels to destroy them. On their way to the people of Lout, those angels passed by Prophet Ibraaheem, may Allaah exalt his mention, as Allaah had commanded them to do so. They had taken the forms of men with handsome faces and gave him the glad tidings of a son who would have much knowledge and wisdom, i.e., Prophet Is-Haaq (Isaac), and after him Prophet Ya'qoob (Jacob, Isaac’s son), may Allaah exalt their mention. The angels also told Prophet Ibraaheem, may Allaah exalt his mention, that they were going to destroy the people of Lout, the inhabitants of Sodom and its surroundings, as Allaah had commanded them to destroy the people of those towns. When Prophet Ibraaheem, may Allaah exalt his mention, heard what the angels said and the torment with which they had been sent, he feared that his nephew, Lout, may Allaah exalt his mention, might be harmed, so he said to them, "But Lout is there". They replied that they knew who was there and told him that Allaah, Glorified and Exalted be He, would save Lout and his family except his wife who did not believe in him and used to help those wrong-doers who were committing homosexuality. Almighty Allaah Says (what means),

{"They (the angels) said: ‘We have been sent to a people who are Mujrimoon (criminals, disbelievers, polytheists, sinners).’ (All) except the family of Lout (Lot); them all we are surely going to save (from destruction), except his wife, of whom We have decreed that she shall be of those who remain behind (i.e. she will be destroyed).’"}

[Quran 15: 58-60].

The angels left Prophet Ibraaheem, may Allaah exalt his mention, and went to the town of Sodom. When Prophet Lout, may Allaah exalt his mention, knew about their arrival, he, (thinking that they were men), went out hiding himself from his people so that they would not know about their arrival. When he saw them, he became grieved, because he feared that if any of his evil people saw them and told the others, they would harm them. Almighty Allaah Says (what means),

{"And when Our Messengers came to Lout (Lot), he was grieved on their account and felt himself straitened for them (lest the town people should approach them to commit immorality (homosexuality) with them). He said: ‘This is a distressful day.’ And his people came rushing towards him, and since aforetime they used to commit homosexuality (immorality, etc.), he said: ‘O my people! Here are my daughters, they are purer for you (if you marry them lawfully). So fear Allaah and degrade me not as regards my guests! Is there not among you a single right-minded man?’"}

[Quran 11: 77-78].

But it did not take long until Prophet Lout’s, may Allaah exalt his mention, wife, who was a disbeliever, went out to her people and said to them, “In Lout’s house there are men the like of whom I have never seen!” Once the people of Lout heard that, they went quickly to the house of Prophet Lout, may Allaah exalt his mention, aiming to commit homosexuality with them. Prophet Lout, may Allaah exalt his mention, argued with his wrong-doing people gently so that they would not commit homosexuality with his guests and was soft in his speech hoping that they would perhaps stop.

He asked them to use the legal way and marry his daughters and satisfy themselves with their wives. However, his wicked people refused this advice and told him frankly, and without shyness, about what they wanted to do, and they said to him, “We do not need your daughters!” Thereupon, Prophet Lout, may Allaah exalt his mention, became even more grieved and wished that he had strong men or kinsfolk who could support him against them. Almighty Allaah says, (what means)

{"He said: ‘Would that I had strength (men) to overpower you, or that I could betake myself to some powerful support (to resist you).’"}[Quran 11: 80].

When the angels observed that Prophet Lout, may Allaah exalt his mention, was so upset, they told him whom they really were. They told him that they were not humans but angels whom Allaah had sent to destroy the people of that town. Then Jibreel (Gabriel), may Allaah exalt his mention, hit the faces of the people with his wing so they lost their eyesight.The angels told Prophet Lout, may Allaah exalt his mention, to take his family and go out with them at night, and that they would hear terrible sounds which would shake mountains but none of them were to look back so that they would not be harmed by the torment that would afflict the people of the town. They also told him that his wife was a disbeliever, and that she would look back and thus be afflicted with the same punishment that would afflict them, and that morning was their appointed time.

The Prophet Lout, may Allaah exalt his mention, get out with his daughters and his wife and marched during the night. The morning approached and he had traveled a long distance with his family when Allaah’s Command came. Jibreel, may Allaah exalt his mention, rooted out their seven towns with his wing and raised them high towards the heavens until the angels heard the sounds of roosters and the dogs’ barking, then he turned them over and swooped down with them toward the earth. While they were falling, the heavens were casting hard stones at them from Hell and they were falling one after the other. The people of Prophet Lout, may Allaah exalt his mention, were totally destroyed and none of them remained alive, as the towns were turned upside down and sunk into the earth until water sprang out of it.

The Prophet Lout, may Allaah exalt his mention, heard terrible sounds and warned his family that no one should look back but his wife looked towards the source of the sounds so she was destroyed.

That was how the people of Prophet Lout, may Allaah exalt his mention, came to an end and how their towns and names were removed from the earth along with their wrongdoing and mischief.
