Women participating in Politics

Q: Female cultural and academic groups are holding discussions about women's political participation in the coming stage through parliament representation and the right to vote. What is the opinion of Your Eminence on these suggestions?

A: I would like to deliver a sincere message to my cultured and educated sisters in Islam which I hope they will grasp well. As the Prophet (peace be upon him) was sent by Allah from among Arabs, his Jewish and Christian enemies conspired against him although they knew that a messenger would be sent at that exact time and knew his name and description beyond a shadow of a doubt.

In this regard, Allah (Exalted be He) says: recognise him (Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم or the Ka‘bah at Makkah) as they recognise their sons. [Surah Al-Baqarah, 2: 146]

He (Glorified be He) also says: Those who follow the Messenger, the Prophet who can neither read nor write (i.e. Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) whom they find written with them in the Taurât (Torah) (Deut, xviii 15) and the Injeel (Gospel) (John xiv, 16), - he commands them for Al-Ma‘rûf (i.e. Islâmic Monotheism and all that Islâm has ordained); and forbids them from Al-Munkar (i.e. disbelief, polytheism of all kinds, and all that Islâm has forbidden); he allows them as lawful At-Tayyibât (i.e. all good and lawful as regards things, deeds, beliefs, persons, foods), and prohibits them as unlawful Al-Khabâ’ith (i.e. all evil and unlawful as regards things, deeds, beliefs, persons and foods), he releases them from their burdens (of Allâh’s Covenant with the children of Israel), and from the fetters (bindings) that were upon them. So those who believe in him (Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم), honour him, help him, and follow the light (the Qur’ân) which has been sent down with him, it is they who will be successful." [Surah Al-A`raf, 7: 157]

Moreover, `Isa (Jesus) (peace be upon him) gave his people the glad tidings of the advent of this honorable Prophet (peace be upon him): and giving glad tidings of a Messenger to come after me, whose name shall be Ahmad. [Surah Al-Saff, 61: 6]

Furthermore, they waited his coming having known the exact time of his advent as well as his description. Having hoped that he would be raised from among the Children of Israel, they disbelieved in him as he was sent from among the Arabs: "And when there came to them (the Jews), a Book (this Qur’ân) from Allâh confirming what is with them [the Taurât (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel)], although aforetime they had invoked Allâh (for coming of Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) in order to gain victory over those who disbelieved, then when there came to them that which they had recognised, they disbelieved in it. So let the Curse of Allâh be on the disbelievers." [Surah Al-Baqarah, 2: 89 ]

In fact, their disbelief in our Prophet (peace be upon him) was caused by pride and prejudice. More gravely, they envy Muslims and the true faith they hold. Although they know that Muslims hold the truth, they refuse to accept Islam and wish for Muslims likewise to forsake it due to their envy. Allah (Exalted and Glorified be He) says: "Many of the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians) wish that if they could turn you away as disbelievers after you have believed, out of envy from their ownselves, even after the truth (that Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم is Allâh’s Messenger) has become manifest unto them." [Surah Al-Baqarah, 2: 109]

They are so envious and jealous of Muslims that they miss no opportunity to attack Islam either verbally through offensive insults or practically through mass killing, destruction and the like. Allah (Exalted and Glorified be He) says: "Should they gain the upper hand over you, they would behave to you as enemies, and stretch forth their hands and their tongues against you with evil, and they desire that you should disbelieve." [Surah Al-Mumtahanah, 60: 2]

Sisters in Islam, I know that I am addressing educated and cultured Muslim minds and I am fully confident of your Islamic awareness and keenness to safeguard the faith of Islam. Therefore, I dare say that such claims should be reconsidered; do they help reinforce Islam? Do they help unite and integrate the Muslim Ummah? Will they lead to the glory of this faith? Sisters in Islam, the issue is not merely that of adopting positions, seizing opportunities, securing seats or other things we hear of or read about.

Sisters in Islam, the issue is that of a non-stop conspiracies of enemies against the Muslim Ummah. They will spare no effort to do us harm and to sow seeds of discord, disunity and conflict amongst us. It should be born in mind that the so-called women's rights they recently propagate are no more than a form of conspiracy. You know that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: I have not left after me any (chance for) Fitnah (trial) more harmful to men than women. (Related by Muslim.)
And: This world is sweet and green (alluring), and Allah will make you successive generations therein, so look at what you do. Beware of the beguilements of this world and those of women, for the first Fitnah among the Children of Israel had to do with women. (Related by Muslim.)

Therefore, I would like that my sisters in Islam to be fully aware of the realities of life and of their responsibilities so that they might not open the door to evil plots against Islam.

It is a fact that we have the problem of some unjust men depriving women of their rights established by Shari`ah (Islamic law) including their right to inheritance and to marry suitable men who propose to them. Some other men commit violence against women, while others deprive women of their right to marry. No doubt, we suffer from such heinous acts committed in clear violation of the Shari`ah which must change.

Hence, we must join forces in the face of the evil schemes of enemies. I think the issue is far more than just women's representation in parliment, equality with men or other claims. Rather, the issue is that of vicious attempts to eliminate this faith within its stronghold, that is, this pure country that witnessed the advent of the Prophet (peace be upon him) and the rise of Islam. In this regard, the Prophet (peace be upon him) informed us that belief will returns and go back to Madinah as a snake returns and goes back to its hole (when in danger).

So, beware and be on guard lest Islam be harmed by its own adherents. May Allah bless you and make you beneficial to Islam and Muslims!
